Summary
This module covers:
• Current trends and future prospects for fossil fuel and renewable energy supplies
• Analysis of energy contributions from different sources: Energy vectors, conversion efficiency and distribution systems, especially for electricity generation.
• Engineering components and analysis of renewable energy technologies, including wind, solar PV and hydropower - generator types, electrical performance.
• Economic and environmental assessment of energy conversion technologies
• Energy Policy: carbon reduction initiatives and life-cycle assessment
• Sustainable transport options and infrastructure.
• Comparison of low carbon energy options including biofuels and nuclear
Reassessment of the module, if required, will be by reassessment of the failed elements.
Target Students
MEng and MSc students from EEE or Mechanical Engineering. Students may not take this module if they have already taken EEEE3019.
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: 1 A0 Poster and 1 A4 Page (List of References)
- 30% Coursework 2: 12 Page Report
- 40% Exam (2-hour)
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To develop students a technical understanding of sustainable energy technologies and the wider issues of resource constraints, environmental and economic issues. The module will cover current technologies and those currently under development. Students will develop knowledge and skills in order to analyse and compare sustainable energy options, particularly relating to the electrical power sector.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
LO1 Evaluate different type of conventional fossil based energy sources and understand their trends depending on the context and application
LO2 Evaluate different type of non-conventional sustainable energy sources and understand their trends depending on the context and application
LO3 Select appropriate type of renewable energy source and energy storage to mitigate risks associated with security of electrical supply for a given application
LO10 Analyse solar panel response under different irradiation and intensity levels; and map their performance from system perspective
LO9 Implement MPPT for wind power generation system for a defined application using a software simulation package
LO8 Utilise pragmatic knowledge of renewable energy sources and systems using a CAE/D tool or a laboratory rig
LO7 Explore and assess potential government policies aimed at sustainable energy generation and its efficient consumption
LO6 Demonstrate an understanding of various renewable energy sources to design an integrated renewable energy system
LO5 Determine high level system sizing and component understanding for the renewable power generation
LO4 Analyse and develop the understanding of sizing for various energy storage systems associated with renewable power generation
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
