Summary

This module presents and develops the basic analytical, computational and experimental tools used in the study of electromagnetic fields and waves at high frequency. Topics covered include vector analysis and Maxwell’s equations in integral form, Maxwell's equations in differential form, plane electromagnetic wave propagation, power flow, methods for electromagnetic field computation and an introduction to antennas.

Educational Aims

To present and develop the basic analytical tools used in the study of electromagnetic fields and waves. Themodule will introduce students to the importance of electromagnetics in a variety of applications and willcover analytic methods for calculating electromagnetic fields, Maxwell's equations, plane electromagneticwave propagation, power flow, and an introduction to antennas.

Learning Outcomes

LO1 Develop skills in translating observations to a mathematical model capable of predictive work; appreciate the relevance of vector calculus and numerical analysis when tackling problems in electromagnetics.
LO2 Demonstrate an intermediate understanding of electromagnetic theory based on Maxwell’s equations, including electromagnetic waves and an understanding of the basic concepts of antennas.
LO3 Provide basic definitions and solve problems related to wave propagation.
LO4 Provide basic definitions and solve problems related to antennas.
