Summary
This module introduces a diverse set of topics that a professional graduate engineer is likely to encounter upon entering employment in the modern sustainable, risk conscious, commercial socio-economic environment.
Particular topics include:
• Company and project management dynamics - how businesses operate, projects are managed including quantitative considerations and how decisions are made in order to achieve objectives
• Awareness of relevant legal requirements governing engineering activities, including personnel, health & safety, contracts, intellectual property rights, product safety and liability issues
• Nurturing technology - how new technology is adopted by industry
• Professional conduct and ethical issues
• Understanding of the key drivers for business success, including innovation, calculated commercial risks and customer satisfaction
Reassessment of the module, if required, will be by reassessment of the failed elements.
Target Students
All 3rd year students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering only.
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 6 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 50% Coursework: Maximum of 20 pages and 10,000 words (group work) report
- 25% Presentation: Group presentation (10 minutes plus 5 minutes questions and answers)
- 25% Exam (2-hour): Examination
Educational Aims
To understand and evaluate business, customer and user needs, including considerations such as the wider engineering context, public perception and aesthetics.To plan and manage the design process, encompassing cost drivers and evaluating outcomes.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
LO1 Apply knowledge of engineering management principles, project management and change management.
LO2 Apply knowledge of the commercial context and relevant legal matters, including intellectual property rights.
LO3 Present a basic business plan to communicate with non-technical audiences.
LO4 Reflect on the effectiveness of the team in developing the business plan.
LO5 Relate the ethical principles of engineering governing bodies to professional practice, incorporating environmental responsibility.
LO6 Utilise tools used to form productive teams.
LO7 Explain how new technology is adopted in industry with reference to risks, risk mitigation and funding.
LO8 Recognise different strategies for product management based upon a product’s lifecycle.
LO9 Distinguish the principles of user-centric product design.
LO10 Identify elements of businesses’ marketing strategies.
