Summary

This module introduces students to the concepts and operating principles of fixed and variable speed electric machine and drive systems. The module will use a number of system examples to demonstrate how machines and drive systems are specified, designed, controlled and operated.

Reassessment of this module, if required, will be by 100% exam.

Target Students

Part II students on courses offered by Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Classes

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

This module introduces students to the concepts and operating principles of fixed and variable speed electric machine and drive systems. The module will use a number of system examples to demonstrate how the machines and drive systems are specified, designed, controlled and operated.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

LO1 Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of electromagnetism and the underlying physical principles of operation and behaviour of rotating electrical machines.
LO2 Classify and distinguish commonly used types of electrical machines by their underlying principles, typical operating characteristics and suitable applications.
LO3 Select and employ techniques for analysing the performance of AC electrical machines and typical variable speed drive technologies.
LO4 Build and simulate electromagnetic performance of machines using Analysis software; Analyse the performance of the designed machine.
LO5 Analyse the technologies used to create a variable speed drive system and their application.
LO6 Select and apply suitable variable speed motor drive systems for a range of common applications such as transportation and renewable generation.
LO7 Develop and apply vector control systems for improved drive system operation.

This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:

C1, C2, C3, C5, C6, C7, C12, C13, C18
