Summary
This module covers a selection of topics where information is acquired from sensors and subsequently electronically processed. Applications will typically include, optical, acoustic, non-destructive evaluation, medical and bio-photonics.
Reassessment of the module, if required, will be by reassessment of the failed elements.
Target Students
3rd and 4th year and MSc students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 25% Coursework 1: Report containing, code, outputs and commentary
- 25% Coursework 2: 5 page design report
- 50% Exam (2-hour)
Educational Aims
To provide students with the necessary background knowledge so that they can understand sensors and how to process the signals from them for a range of applications.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate knowledge of time domain and frequency domain representation of signals.
LO2 Classify and analyse different types of signals.
LO3 Describe the operating principles of a variety of practical electronic sensors for a range of different measurands.
LO4 Evaluate sensor choices when designing a sensing system.
LO5 Choose appropriate signal conditioning for a sensor (amplification, filtering, matching etc.).
LO6 Develop and justify solutions to extract information using appropriate signal processing techniques for signals from sensors.
LO7 Discuss sensing approaches for range of applications, including the basic sensor operation through to the extraction and utilisation of the information.
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
C1, M1, C2, C13 and M13
