Summary

Engineers in an industry usually become involved in extended practical or theoretical projects. This module provides an opportunity for students to work in a similar situation. Students indicate their project preferences, work under the supervision of an expert staff member, write a dissertation on their work, and present it publicly.

Reassessment of this module, if required, will be by resubmission of the final thesis.

Target Students

Final year BEng students on courses offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Assessment

Educational Aims

The module aims to give experience of completing a major investigation, including planning the work to meet a final deadline and reporting on the work both in a structured written report and by an oral presentation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
LO1 Identify and evaluate the literature to address a complex electrical and electronic engineering problem.
LO2 Plan, structure and continually review future project activities using engineering management principles.
LO3 Select appropriate engineering tools and processes.
LO4 Identify the expected outcome and risk of project plan and propose the mitigation actions where required.
LO5 Communicate a complex engineering problem to a non-technical audience.
LO6 Communicate the solution to a complex engineering problem to a technical audience.
LO7 Critically reflect on the process of solving a complex engineering problem and outcomes achieved.
LO8 Select and apply appropriate engineering tools to model and solve complex electrical and electronics engineering problems.
LO9 Apply a set of engineering principles to solve complex problems, where some of the knowledge is at the forefront of the topic.
LO10 Design solutions to complex a problem that meets a specified requirement.
LO11 Interpret and compare available data to substantiate a conclusion based on core principles of mathematics and engineering.

This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
C1, C2, C3, M3, C4, C5, C6, M6, C9, M9, C13, M13, C15, M15, C17, C18 and M18
