Summary
This module introduces second year undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to a selected range of activities drawn from the design and development cycle undertaken to provide practical solutions to electronic engineering problems. The activity focuses around hands-on laboratory-based project and team work. Students undertake the development of an electronics and communications system from concept to functional prototype.
Reassessment will be carried out through a significant practical activity (of 1 week length) during the summer. This will culminate in a technical demonstration and viva.
Target Students
Only available to second year students from EE programme of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Co-requisites
Modules you must take in the same academic year, or have taken in a previous year, to enrol in this module:
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 6 weeks
- One 4-hour laboratory each week for 6 weeks
- Two 7-hour laboratorys each week for 6 weeks
Assessment
- 10% Assignment: 1000 word reflective report
- 10% Presentation: 10 minute video presentation
- 40% In-Class Exam (Practical): A 1-on-1 demonstration of the final system to a member of staff, student to explain their contribution to the work
- 40% Viva Voce: A 1-on-1 technical interview, student to answer questions related to the project
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is for students to gain experience of teamworking within the context of an engineering project. Students will also develop technical skills related to small signal circuit design, microcontroller programming, and programmable logic.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
LO1: Design and Construct electronic circuits.
LO2: Develop microcontroller firmware.
LO3: Design for programmable logic hardware.
LO4: Examine ethical and EDI issues related to engineering systems.
LO5: Test a system against a technical specification using basic lab equipment.
LO6: Contribute to team efforts to develop a system.
LO7: Explain project operation in an interview-like setting.
LO8: Elaborate on system operation in a technical viva.
LO9: Justify system design choices
