Summary
This module introduces second year undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to a selected range of activities drawn from the design and development cycle undertaken to provide practical solutions to electronic engineering problems. The activity focuses around hands-on laboratory-based project, professionalism and team-work. Students undertake the development of an electronics and communications system from concept to functional prototype.
Reassessment will be carried out through a significant practical activity (of 1 week length) during the summer. This will culminate in a technical demonstration and viva.
Target Students
Only available to second year students on U6UEEENG, U7UEEENG, U6UELENG, U7UELENGM, U6UETENG, U7UETENG, U6UECENG, U7UECENG, or their derivatives.
Assessment
- 30% Technical Report 1: Technical Report on effectiveness of group working, resource management and personal reflection.
- 10% Video Presentation 1: 10 minute video presentation to be submitted online
- 10% Demonstration Week 1: A demonstration and discussion of each student’s contribution to the project and completion of group objectives for Project Week 1 to a member of staff.
- 30% Interview 1: A 1-on-1 interview, student to answer questions related to the project.
- 10% Demonstration Week 2: A demonstration and discussion of each student’s contribution to the project and completion of group objectives for Project Week 2 to a member of staff.
- 10% Demonstration Week 3: A demonstration and discussion of each student’s contribution to the project and completion of group objectives for Project Week 3 to a member of staff.
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is for students to gain experience of teamworking within the context of an engineering project. Students will also develop technical skills related to small signal circuit design, microcontroller programming, and programmable logic.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
LO1 Design and Construct electronic circuits.
LO2 Develop microcontroller firmware.
LO3 Design for programmable logic hardware.
LO4 Examine ethical and EDI issues related to engineering systems.
LO5 Test a system against a technical specification using basic lab equipment.
LO6 Contribute to team efforts to develop a system.
LO7 Explain project operation in an interview-like setting.
LO8 Elaborate on system operation in a technical viva.
LO9 Justify system design choices.
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
C1, C2, M2, C3, M3, C4, C5, M5, C6, M6, C7, C8, M8, C11, M11, C12, M12, C13, M13, C16, C17, M17
