Summary
This module introduces a variety of themes that are at the forefront of contemporary electrical and electronic engineering systems. The presentations will cover critical technological enablers and breakthroughs and their commercial and socio-economic impact, which drive the engineering research and development process. This provides a broader context for the material covered in the co-requisite modules. The module will cover three topics, which may vary from year to year. The topics covered will vary each year and typical subjects might include:
• Advanced Communications
• Medical Electronics
• Electric Transportation
Reassessment of the module, if required, will be by reassessment of the failed elements.
Target Students
Electrical and Electron Eng Part I students
Classes
- One 2-hour workshop
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 6 weeks

Educational Aims
To provide a further introduction (beyond that of EEEE1045) to a variety of more complex electrical and electronic themes that are found in contemporary systems.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to
LO1 Analyse the commercial and socio-economic drivers in the engineering research and development process.
LO2 Explain the technology basis underpinning a contemporary engineering theme.
LO3 Critically appraise technology in a contemporary engineering theme within the broader context of its application in society, through the use of technical literature.
LO4 Summarise the key ideas in a contemporary engineering technology so that it can be understood by a technical audience.
LO5 Outline potential ethical concerns in a contemporary engineering theme.
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
C1, C4, C5, C8, and C17
