Summary

This module introduces first year undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to the essential attributes that modern engineers should possess. It includes hands-on problem solving to design and develop solutions to posed engineering challenges, laboratory based project and team work, data analysis, self-learning and information presentation.
For all students, reassessment of the overall module, if required, must be taken in attendance during the next academic session.

Target Students

Only available to qualifying year students on courses offered by Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Classes

Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To develop core skills needed by modern engineers, and to provide a guided application of the concepts and theory taught in the first year of all undergraduate courses in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Learning Outcomes

LO1 Design solutions to real world practical problems through the application of mathematics, basic electrical and electronic engineering concepts and practical skills.
LO2 Apply and develop robust computer codes and hardware integrations, designed to meet a specific task and show how concepts in hardware programming relate to the devices on which code is executed.
LO3 Select and evaluate the literature and online engineering resources of information to address the solutions of technical problems.
LO4 Acquire and analyse experimental data, including the evaluation of system performance.
LO5 Demonstrate and develop presentation skills as a member of a team.
LO6 Select and use appropriate laboratory equipment, construction, measurement and analysis of electrical and electronic systems.
LO7 Communicate the implementation and outcomes of engineering solutions to technical problems and societal challenges, with risk management.
LO8 Adopt techniques to plan and record the self-learning, function effectively as an individual, as a member or leader of a team for teamwork and project management.
LO9 Demonstrate and develop scientific writing skills as a individual.
LO10 select and apply computer software based tools for design, simulation.
LO11 Demonstrate an awareness of the wider engineering and societal context of the module topics.
LO12 Demonstrate a functional solution to a complex engineering problem.
LO13 Demonstrate an understanding of an iterative design process.
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
C1, C2, C3,  C4, C5, C6,  C7, C9, C11, C12, C13,  C14, C16, C17, C18
