Summary

This module provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts related to the use of power and energy in today's electrical engineering world. The module will introduce the principles and properties of electrical circuits (DC and AC) and will develop tools commonly used to analyse their operation. These tools will then be used to illustrate the general design and behaviour of real world electrical power systems, including issues associated with the integration of renewable energy systems and the challenges faced in developing future power systems. The basic principles of electromagnetic systems will also be introduced and these will be used to illustrate the operation and design of transformers and electrical machines. Reassessment of the module, if required, will be by reassessment of the failed elements.

Educational Aims

To introduce students to the fundamental characteristics of electrical power systems including the typical components used in these systems, and to develop their ability to predict the behaviour of these systems using analytical tools and techniques.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:
1. Select and apply appropriate simple circuit reduction and analysis techniques for resistive circuits - Coursework 1
2. Select and apply appropriate circuit reduction techniques (mesh, nodal, superposition, Thevenin and Norton) to DC and AC electrical systems - Exam
3. Analyse and evaluate voltage, current and power in AC circuits by applying phasor analysis - Exam
4. Analyse and evaluate voltage, current and power in three phase circuits - Exam
5. Analyse and evaluate the transient behaviour of RLC circuits - Exam
6. Discuss the main features of renewable energy systems.- Coursework 2
7. Develop appropriate models for transformers and employ these to determine efficiency and regulation -Coursework 3
8. Describe and evaluate the behaviour of coils and motors.- Exam.
