Summary

Module Synopsis (as in programme document):

This module contains two parts, and these are “Orientation to School” and “Teaching Assistantship”.  The two parts can be conducted simultaneously. The details of the two parts are as follows:   

 

Orientation to School

i. Orientation is carried out by the various members of the school.  Orientation is carried out through various means:

a) Explanation

b) Observation and taking notes

c) Collecting information

d) Guidance

e) Discussion

f) Talk and workshop

g) Report of the orientation

 

ii. During the orientation phase, the student-teacher will be exposed and given opportunities to take part in:

a) Government policies and reforms

b) Organizational culture and school environment

c) School administration and management

d) Curricular management (teaching and learning)

See Appendix A for the content of the Orientation Programme is as follows:

 

Teaching Assistantship

Student teachers have to provide teaching assistance to assigned mentors.  At the end of the teaching assistantship, the student teachers need to submit a portfolio that includes materials and reflections.

Educational Aims

This module aims to provide a programme to help student teachers adapt to the culture, environment, and community of the school.

Learning Outcomes

A Knowledge and Understanding

A1 pedagogical knowledge which would enhance professional practice, self-competency and self-efficacy as teachers;

A2 an understanding of the issues involved in class management and effective delivery of lessons;

A3 an understanding of application of knowledge and concepts which were obtained from lectures to real situation where the proses of teaching and learning happens in schools;

B Intellectual Skills

B1 a critical appreciation of the wider relationships involved with the stakeholders of the school;

B2 good relationships which enable cooperation and collaboration among the school and the community in which the school serves;

B3 an initial insight into classroom teaching and classroom management;

C Professional Practical Skills

C1 an appreciation in practice of how schools operate and how they use their skills in making schools as effective institutions of learning;

C2 pedagogical skills that would improve teaching and learning practices;

D Transferable (key) Skills

D1 demonstrate good teaching skills;

D2 work independently, demonstrating initiative, self-organization and time management;

D3 demonstrate competence in a range of IT skills as a means of communication, presentation, learning and teaching.
