Summary
This module will examine several crucial questions faced by those working in the field of TCSOL. The actual content will be negotiable, but typical topics will include:
- Content and Chinese language integrated learning
- Developing CFL teachers (CFL: Chinese as a second or foreign language)
- Innovative pedagogies in TCSOL, such as, Technology-assisted CFL
- Teaching Chinese for specific purposes
- Teaching Chinese grammar
- Teaching Chinese language pronunciation
- Teaching Chinese through literature
- Teaching Chinese as a heritage language at complementary schools
- The place of character-writing
Students will be expected to read, understand and engage critically with the research presented on these topics.
Target Students
Students taking MA Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL). And other PGT programmes within the School of Education. Available to TESOL and PGT Exchange students.
Classes
This module is taught through a series of seminars.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: 6,000 words or equivalent.

This module aims to:•develop skills to explore own responses and develop own positions•review how research works in exploring various phenomena in second and foreign language teaching and learning•critically analyse and evaluate relevant professional practice, including your own, in the light of current theory and practice in the field•formulate possible solutions to problems in the practice of TCSOL methodologyLearning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding
A student who completes this module successfully will have knowledge and understanding of:
- current issues in language teaching methodology and research; how programmes can be designed and delivered to meet more effectively the needs of particular learners in specific TCSOL teaching contexts
- a specific aspect of TCSOL education, which will enable them to make a valuable contribution to language education in their own context
B. Intellectual Skills
A student who completes this module successfully will be able to:
- critically evaluate relevant practice, including their own, in the light of current theory and practice in the field;
- formulate possible solutions to problems in the practice of language education
- critically evaluate relevant theory and empirical research in language education.
C. Transferable Skills
A student who completes this module successfully will be able to:
- critically analyse and evaluate their own professional practice and that of others;
- communicate clearly and confidently on educational issues
- analyse and evaluate the relevance and adequacy of theory, empirical studies and practical proposals relating to education.
