Summary

The researching and writing of a substantive piece of scholarship within the field of the MA. Students will choose a topic in consultation with their MA Course Leader and an appropriate supervisor. The topic will normally be based on interests and skills students have developed in the course of the modules already studied.

Educational Aims

The module aims to allow the candidate to engage in a substantive piece of scholarship on a subject related to their MA programme, chosen in consultation with the supervisor and under one to one tutorial guidance.This module aims to provide candidates with: the opportunity to research in depth a topic of their choice, under the direction of a subject specialist; the skills required to carry out sustained independent research.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
Candidates will develop knowledge and understanding of:

  • a topic related to their scholarly and professional interests developed during their MA and contributing to the aims of their MA programme.Intellectual Skills:
    Candidates will develop the ability to:
  • evaluate and critique current research and scholarship relating to a chosen topic;
  • analyse individual texts or topics within an intellectual framework informed by current scholarship.Professional/Practical Skills
    Candidates will develop the ability to:
  • articulate and critique knowledge and understanding of the chosen area of study and methodological approach;
  • carry out research within their chosen methodology, using appropriate methods;
  • evaluate the material developed or acquired;
  • present their research appropriately. Transferable Skills
    Candidates will develop transferable skills in:
  • critical analysis, independent study, theoretical and empirical research, report writing and presentation.
