Educational Aims

This module explores essential skills necessary for teachers to manage effective learning and teaching environments to maximize learning. Emphasis will be placed on how teachers can create motivating learning environments, develop self-regulation in learners, prevent and address behaviours that impede learning, and enhance behaviours that maximise learning. This module also introduces students to effective strategies for planning and implementing instruction, building healthy and sustainable relationships with stakeholders as well as organizing time and the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

Students will develop:

A1 An understanding of theories and approaches related to the management of teaching and learning

A2 An understanding of the impact of classroom management on  children’s learning, motivation, social-emotional development and behaviours

A3 knowledge of the current debates about effective measures for classroom management

 

 

B Intellectual skills

Students will develop:

B1 A critical appreciation of the factors involved in children’s learning and classroom management strategies

B2 A critical insight of classroom management approaches and strategies

B3 A sensitivity to issues of inclusion

 

 

C Professional practical skills

Students will develop:

C1  an appreciation in practice of how schools may adopt classroom and schoolwide management approaches to meet the diverse needs of students

C2  an ability to observe and identify different approaches of classroom management

C3 an ability to use reflecting teaching as a means of developing classroom management skills

Students will:   

D1 demonstrate good written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills

D2 work independently, demonstrating initiative, self-organisation and time management

D3 collaborate as part of a group, taking the lead where appropriate, and fulfilling agreed responsibilities

D4 use ICT confidently and appropriately for study, teaching and self-development
