Educational Aims
The module provides an introduction to understanding the changing role literacy plays in school and society in transforming lives. It raises students’ awareness of what research suggests about elements that support and challenge literacy acquisition, with highlights to ESL learners. It also considers new developments in the teaching of literacy throughout the life-span, including key techniques in developing literacy skills in inclusive contexts.Learning Outcomes

A3 an appreciation of the changing environments in which the teaching of literacy has developed

B1 an appreciation of the relationship between the theory and the practice of literacy in the classroom
B2 an awareness of the issues surrounding literacy in different contexts

C1 an understanding of approaches to teaching literacy
C2 an ability to observe and identify different ways to teach literacy
C3 an ability to reflect on teaching materials used to foster literacy, with attention to the needs of different age learners, those with literacy difficulties and those who speak English as a second language.
