Summary
The module integrates psychology, educational studies, and neuroscience to provide an introductory overview of human development and learning. It will outline some of biological, cultural, social and cognitive factors that shape the course of human learning. It will include:
- major theoretical frameworks that explain key concepts in learning and development, the architecture of mind and brain and how learning is bounded by context.
- how children develop: how they come to perceive, reason, and understand the world around them, how they learn to communicate with friends and parents and how the social relationships they form are fundamental to their development.
- how people learn: what are the key aspects of the cognitive system that support learning (such as perception, attention, memory and reasoning) as well as how learning is shaped by social contexts.
- how learners differ from one another: what makes an individual learner unique and how are motivation, personality and intelligence are currently understood.
Target Students
This module is on the BA (Hons) Education programme and is also available to all undergraduate students and all Exchange students.
Classes
This module is taught through a combination of seminars and lectures.
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Written in person exam.
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
In the context of teaching and learning, this module aims to: introduce students to major theoretical frameworks that underpin our understanding of learning and development enable students to understand the mind and brain explain how children develop and come to understand the world around them enhance students understanding of the cognitive and social aspects of learning address current theories of individual differences between learners such as motivation, personality and intelligence.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
Students should demonstrate a critical understanding of:
-the underlying values, theories and concepts relevant to our understanding of learning and development
-current theories which address the diversity of learners and the complexities of the education process, including the cognitive and social aspects of learning and individual differences between learners, such as motivation, personality and intelligence
Intellectual Skills
Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
-analyse educational concepts, theories and issues of policy as they relate to learning and development in a systematic way
-select a range of relevant primary and secondary sources, including theoretical and research-based evidence, to extend their knowledge and understanding
Professional Practical Skills
Students will be able to demonstrate they can:
-use research skills appropriate to the discipline of education and the study of learning and development: quantitative, qualitative and library based, written and oral communication, and textual analysis
Transferable Skills
Students should be able to
-process and synthesise empirical and theoretical data, to create new syntheses and to present and justify a chosen position having drawn on relevant theoretical perspectives.
