Summary
This module operates across all modules to induct students into their lives as functional social scientists. In this module first year students learn the academic skills they will need to complete their first year work successfully. This includes developing an understanding of themselves as social scientists and reflection on their own skills. The key skills and knowledge will include:note taking; finding and using academic sources; academic referencing; critical evaluation of evidence and ideas; planning and implementing academic projects; academic writing; participating in academic discussion; independent collaborative working; academic integrity and ethical behaviour; becoming aware of your own personal positioning and its influence on your understanding.

Educational Aims
The module aims to: support first year students as they make the transition into degree level work. enable students to reflect on and begin to develop effective skills for study and research, reflective writing, and oral presentation. The Education BA includes modules of specialized content within a range of social sciences areas. The course aims to develop professional competence in note taking, accessing resources, academic referencing, information management, project planning, effective academic writing, seminar participation, and collaborative working. Students will understand professional integrity and begin to learn about ethical behaviour. Specific attention will be directed toward encouraging students to see themselves as active and reflexive learners: the course is to be supplemented with self-directed learning tasks and exercises alongside independent study.Learning Outcomes
