Summary
This module equips students with the advanced knowledge and skills required to interpret between English and Chinese in consecutive mode at conference settings. It focuses on delivering the speaker’s intended message to the audience, with emphasis on the overall performance of the interpreter and the impact of interpreting upon the audience, in addition to accuracy and completeness. Techniques are developed for communication with the audience. Teamwork skills and ethics will be introduced.
This module is not compensatable, that is it must be passed before students can progress to the next stage.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Spring semester. Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
Students taking the MA in Interpreting and Translation at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, not open to mobility students
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 10% Continuous assessment 1 (0-hour-3-minute): Public speaking in 3 minutes (amounts to 800 words)
- 40% Continuous assessment 2 (0-hour-15-minute): Around 15 minutes (amounts to 4000 words)
- 50% Continuous assessment 3 (0-hour-20-minute): 20 minutes (amounts to 5200 words)
Educational Aims
The module will enable students to develop the competence and confidence to interpret between Chinese and English in the consecutive mode. They shall be able to interpret ideas expressed in one language into another as smoothly and idiomatically as possible. The practice will also sensitize them to issues related to the fundamental concepts and models in consecutive interpretation.Learning Outcomes
