Summary
Students will build up a portfolio of translations across a broad range of subject areas and text types including but not limited to media, culture, literature, science and technology. Feedbacks will be provided in workshops with the students contributing in the discussion of their own strategies and problems with regard to specific translation assignments. Students will also learn to tailor their work to the needs of the end users.
Group work will be organized in order to build up student’s knowledge in team work settings. Skills of peer- and self-criticism of translation drafts will also be integrated in the delivery so that general issues arising from translations can be discussed. Techniques and skills to assess a translation project and deal with problems that professional translators encounter will be developed at the same time.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
This module is not compensatable, that is it must be passed before students can progress to the next stage.
Target Students
Students taking the MA in Interpreting and Translation at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, not open to mobility students.
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 40% Translation assignments: 4 Translation Assignments and 2 Group Projects (around 5000 words) Group Projects will be assessed (around 1500 words for each student)
- 60% Examination (2-hour): 2 hours (around 1000 words)
Educational Aims
This module will enable students to apply translation theory to practical translation, both into Chinese and into English. It will sharpen the students’ understanding of the difference between the two languages so that they will be able render into and from them. It also aims at developing their understanding of practical issues in translation through translating general media, economy, technical and literary texts. Through various practices, students will develop skills in resolving different types of translation problems such as syntactic, semantic and pragmatic among others while raising their awareness of translation strategies.Learning Outcomes
