Summary
Introduction to the techniques of Community and Public Service Interpreting(CPSI) Interpreting, such as short consecutive and liaison interpreting, chuchotage (simultaneous whispered interpreting), telephone interpreting and sight translation; Introduction to a range of settings (business and commerce, administrative, educational, tourism, health, etc.) and to the communicative characteristics and the challenges which may be encountered in CPSI contexts (such as business, commerce, tourism, education, legal, health and administrative areas). Guidance in compiling relevant terminology for specific interpreting settings; critical discussion of interpreter role, ethics and positioning in CPSI settings, based on specific scenarios; development of peer and self evaluation skills and implementation of active self-reflective practice.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
Students taking the MA in Interpreting and Translation at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 50% Interpreting Assignment (0-hour-10-minute): Consecutive interpreting in both directions (around 10 minutes per group amounts to about 2600 in wordcount).
- 50% Sight Translation Test (0-hour-10-minute): 2 sight translation tests in class (one in each direction, around 10 minutes per group together, amounts to about 2600 in wordcount)
Educational Aims
This module enables students to develop interpreting skills, and to become familiar with the challenges of interpreting in CPSI settings and possible solutions. Students will work both into Chinese and into English.Learning Outcomes
