Summary
This module introduces key terms, tools and topics in the study of language, linguistics and applied linguistics. The module includes an introduction to the descriptive and analytical tools of the major branches of language and linguistic study and exemplifies their applications to everyday language phenomenon and the varied branches of applied linguistics.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
Students following the MA in Applied Linguistics; Open to students on other MA programmes within the School with the approval of the module convenor. Open to students on other MA programmes outside of the School with approval from the module convenor.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: 1,000 word written essay
- 25% Presentation 1: 10-minute oral presentation
- 25% Exam (1-hour): 1-hour unseen exam (in-class)
Educational Aims
Educational aims are twofold:1.To equip students with the historical context and development of linguistics and applied linguistics as disciplines and explore their main branches of study;2.To develop linguistic analytical skills and the ability to apply linguistic tools and frameworks in everyday situations.Learning Outcomes

• a range of theoretical approaches, frameworks, tools and sub-disciplines in linguistic and interdisciplinary applied linguistics research
