Summary
This module explores some main themes that have been investigated in the field of Intercultural Communication. Intercultural Communication is an extremely broad field of study and has attracted intellectual interest of researchers from various disciplines. We will mainly focus on the contributions of research from Applied Linguistics especially Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics with reference to some key studies in Cross-Cultural Psychology. The major themes and concepts that we are going to explore include definitions / deconstruction of culture, cross-cultural pragmatics, barriers to successful communication such as stereotyping, prejudice and ethnocentrism, studies of cultural values, cultural self-perception and world views / thinking patterns and their impact on interpersonal communication, intercultural conflict communication and intercultural competence, etc.. The students are expected to reflect actively on their personal experiences and to develop the ability in applying theories to the analysis of real life cases in intercultural communication.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Spring semester. First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 90% Final assignment: 3000 words mini research project, analytical essay or critical exploration
- 10% Portfolio: 1000 words, including a self reflection passage and a collection of notes / worksheets, as evidence of active participation in module learning activities
