Summary
The module looks at the use of corpus methodology to study a wide range of areas and issues in applied linguistics, including the study of vocabulary and lexico-grammar, the exploration of learner language, and the analysis of discourse, language and register/genre, and English Language Teaching,. The aim of the module is to provide students with an introduction to selected tools and resources used for corpus analysis, and to help them develop a range of skills needed to build up and/or analyse computerised samples of natural language. The emphasis of the module is on the application of corpus analysis to specific research questions, and students will have the opportunity to explore the use of corpus methodologies in relation to their own research interests and to formulate new lines of inquiry that they will investigate with a corpus approach.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Spring semester. First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (e.g. essay) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
Students following the MA in Applied Linguistics.Open to students on the MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages as well as other MA programmes within the School.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: One 3,500-word project/essay
Educational Aims
After completing this module, students will -• Have a good understanding of the methodology of using corpus in the study of language• Understand the basis of corpus construction• Become familiar with corpus processing and search tools• Become familiar with quantitative analysis of corpus, and• Apply corpus linguistic methodology to various subfields of applied linguisticsLearning Outcomes

• critical and analytical method in relation to spoken and written discourse stored in electronic format;
• applications of corpus analysis in different areas of applied linguistics;
• methodological issues in producing and interpreting sets of language data (corpora).
