Summary

This module will focus on the acquisition of pragmatic professional work based skills such as:
 • reflective skills
• self-directed learning (goal setting, planning, time management etc..)
 • digital literacies for language learning
 • intercultural communication skills
 • cross cultural learning styles and teaching strategies
 • mentoring, leadership
 • problem solving
 • peer and self-assessment
Students on this module may be required to:
 • act as classroom assistants
 •practice-teach and be observed at designated primary, middle and high schools in the Ningbo area-identify areas of linguistic competence that they will assist others in improving and develop in partnership with their mentees the necessary language learning strategies and self-control strategies
 • design and develop authentic language learning materials
 • organise extra-curricular cultural activities for the participation of willing YR1 UNNC students
 • practice-teach to willing YR1 UNNC students and be observed

Target Students

This module targets students who are studying a professional post graduate taught course related to teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Classes

Peer micro-teaching will take place in weeks 3 & 6, while teaching practice will be done in weeks 9 & 10. Where possible, there will be 4 weeks of teaching practice from weeks 7-10

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to give student teachers registered on UNNC MA TESOL the opportunity to learn English Language teaching in the classroom context and to practice teaching, be observed and given feedback thereby developing their ability to teach in an international context and to manage different cognitive learning styles. It will also boost their employability skills and serve their career plans whilst remaining at the University and working flexibly around their studies.

By the end of this module students will be expected to:
Knowledge and Understanding
A student who completes this module successfully will have knowledge and understanding of:
• major theories and practices of planning and delivering classroom instruction;
• the implications pedagogy for real-world classroom practice;
• the practical teaching of the full range of language aspects (reading, writing, grammar, speaking, vocabulary)
• classroom management strategies;
• practice training and exposure in the real-world classroom
• Have acquired sufficient knowledge and understanding of language learning and teaching to support language learners efficiently
• Identify language learner needs and design or select appropriate learning resources
• Work independently and as part of a team
• Analyse, evidence and showcase the outcomes of their practice-teaching


Thinking Skills
A student who completes this module successfully will be able to:
• critically evaluate the importance of pedagogy and classroom practice theories and research;
• critically evaluate teaching approaches and classroom activities;
• express their thoughts on classroom practice and research orally and in writing in a coherent and convincing manner;
• formulate possible solutions to problems in the light theory and research about classroom practice
Transferable Skills

A student who completes this module successfully will be able to:
• critically analyse and evaluate their own professional practice and that of others;
• communicate clearly and confidently on educational issues;
• develop strategies for implementing change in their professional practice;
• use IT to achieve personal and professional purposes; use digital literacies for language learning
• analyse and evaluate the relevance and adequacy of theory, empirical studies and practical proposals relating to education.
