Summary
The module focuses on key areas in applied linguistics which are of considerable importance to the field of TESOL, and explores them from the perspective of both language teachers and learners:
• the history of applied linguistics;
• descriptions of language systems: grammar, lexis and phonology;
• areas of applied linguistics particularly relevant to the teaching of productive skills, especially sociolinguistics and pragmatics;
• areas of applied linguistics particularly relevant to the teaching of receptive skills, especially psycholinguistics;
Please note this module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
Students taking the MA TESOL.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 40% In-class timed assignment 1: 1500 words mid-semester written assignment.
- 50% In-class timed assignment 2: 1500 words written assignment - end of semester
- 10% Portfolio: 5-minute reflective video - end of semester

Educational Aims
• develop in participants a critical awareness and understanding of developments and trends in applied linguistics, key areas of applied linguistics, and the relationship between these areas and TESOL practice.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding
A student who completes this module successfully will have knowledge and understanding of:
• key areas in applied linguistics which are of considerable importance to the field of TESOL, and be able to explore them from the perspectives of both language teachers and learners;
• the history and scope of applied linguistics;
• descriptions of language systems; phonology and pronunciation, grammar, lexis
• areas of applied linguistics particularly relevant to the teaching of receptive skills, especially psycholinguistics.
B. Intellectual Skills
A student who completes this module successfully will have:
• critically analysed and evaluated their own professional practice in light of established applied linguistic descriptions;
• critically analysed and evaluated the importance of key applied linguistic insights in relation to their own teaching practice;
• expressed their thoughts and feelings on the relationship between applied linguistics and TESOL orally and in writing in a coherent and convincing manner;
• formulate possible solutions to problems using insights from applied linguistics.
C. Professional/Practical Skills
• This forms part of an in-service course leading to an academic qualification.
D. Transferable/Key Skills
Students who successfully complete this module will be able to:
• critically analyse and evaluate their own professional practice and that of others;
• communicate on issues in language education with greater confidence;
• develop strategies for implementing change in their professional practice;
• use IT to achieve personal and professional purposes;
• analyse and evaluate the relevance and adequacy of theory and empirical studies relating to language education.
