Summary
This module builds on the foundation established by Introduction to Linguistics and Language and Context in order to explore the discipline of literary linguistics or 'stylistics'. The emphasis is on the analysis of aspects of literary texts, in order to show their linguistic patterns and provide an account of their readerly effects, significance, meaning and value. The module offers an opportunity for specialisation in preparation for level 3 modules in modern English Language.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Pre-requisite: Students must have taken EDEN1000 Language and Context in Level 1
Target Students
Level 2 students enrolled in the BA Honours English Language and Applied Linguistics; BA Honours English with International Business and not open to mobility students.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: 3000-word stylistic analysis of a literary text or texts
- Presentation 1: Oral presentation of descriptive analysis of a literary text or texts
