Summary
This module comprises a formal introduction to research methods in Applied Linguistics. This includes:
• Literature search, retrieval, and critical appraisal
• Creation and management of a bibliography
• Hypothesis formulation and testing.
• Research methods and design, both quantitative and qualitative
• Data gathering and recording.
• Statistical approaches to analysis of research data and rationale for their use
• Research report writing and presentation of research data
• Research ethics
• Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
BA Hons English Language and Applied Linguistics, BA Hons English Language and Literature, BA Hons English Studies with International Business. Other UG students by arrangement with the module convenor.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 10 weeks
Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester.
Assessment
- 80% Assignment: 2,500 word written assignment
- 20% Exam (1-hour): 1-hour in-class exam with a range of question types (for example, short answer, long answer, analysis, and multiple choice)
