Summary

This module presents recent developments in macroeconomics. There will be a mix of theory and applications. The main theories to be covered, include dynamic optimization, real business cycle theory and the theory of economic growth. These will be illustrated using examples drawn from various policy issues. You will learn the techniques used by macroeconomic researchers to identify issues that are important for our understanding of the economy; and also, how to apply macroeconomic theory to analyze the potential of macroeconomic policy to improve economic welfare.

Target Students

Available for final year Undergraduate students on Economics degree programmes (including final year Undergraduate students on the BA Jt Hons Politics and Economics and BSc Jt Hons Maths and Economics degrees). Not available for Exchange students.

Classes

This module is delivered through a combination of lectures and seminars.

Educational Aims

Education Aims:To lay the foundations necessary for an understanding of those Year 3 courses drawing on such a conceptual framework.To stimulate an interest in policy issues.To instruct in the basic analytic and empirical techniques.The module aims to enable the participants to develop:             The capacity of making informed policy judgements in the field.The ability of identifying strategies to establish the effect of changes in the macroeconomic environment.Critical understanding of the main concepts and issues of macroeconomics.

A4: Demonstrate understanding of verbal, graphical, mathematical and econometric representation of economic ideas and analysis, including the relationship between them.
