Summary
The first part of the module introduces students to the key critical concepts and theoretical work on film genres, while the second part anchors the study of genre within the historically located contexts of its production and consumption.
A single coursework assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.
Target Students
Only available for International Media & Communication Studies students, Film and Television Studies students, History of Art students, Liberal Arts students, American and Canadian Studies students and Exchange students
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks

Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: 1,000 word written work
- 80% Coursework 2: 2,500 word essay

Educational Aims
To extend students' awareness of the analysis of genres; to examine film genres within the contexts of production and consumption; to introduce students to ways and means of studying film genres through the use of primary and secondary materials and readings.Learning Outcomes
A) Knowledge and Understanding. By the end of the module students should be able to: Understand different critical approaches to the subject of American film genres; Assess the debates over the study of genre; Understand genre in terms of both the production and consumption of films; Analyse individual film texts in terms of genre.
B) Intellectual Skills. Apply ideas and concepts in the discussion of cultural texts and materials. Construct coherent and independent arguments.
C) Professional Skills. The module will develop students' ability to: Select, sift and synthesize information from a variety of primary and secondary materials. Write accurately and grammatically and present written material using appropriate conventions.
D) Transferable Skills The module will also develop students' ability to: Manage a large and disparate body of information ยท Use IT to word process their assessed essays. Speak and write cogently about a chosen subject area.
