Summary
This module is designed to support first year students as they make the transition into degree level work. Students will gain skills in independent and collaborative learning with the aid of guided and self directed learning tasks and individual and group research projects. The module prepares the ground for subsequent research training and for the final year dissertation.
A single coursework assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Only available for Film and Television Studies students, International Media and Communication Studies students
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 22 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 22 weeks

Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: 500 word written work
- 40% Coursework 2: 1000 word essay
- 40% Coursework 3: 1500 word written work

Educational Aims
This module is designed to support first year students as they make the transition into degree level work. In the first semester the module aims to develop professional competence in note taking, accessing resources via the library, academic referencing, information management, project planning, effective academic writing, seminar participation, and collaborative working. Specific attention will be directed toward encouraging students to see themselves as active and reflexive learners. In the second semester attention turns to preparing students for independent research, introducing the fundamentals of media research practice.Learning Outcomes

(B1) Research, gather and analyse materials from a wide range of sources, including paper, electronic and audio-visual media
(B2) Critically evaluate theories, arguments, assumptions, qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate approaches and vocabularies to form judgments and conclusions

(B4) Perform information retrieval and textual re-organisation involved in processing complex information
Transferable/key skills - Students are provided with the training to be able to demonstrate
