Summary

This module provides an introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of Latin; no previous knowledge is assumed. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the ability to analyse and understand basic Latin sentences and short passages. Any students with queries about the level appropriate for them, or about pre-/co-requisites, should contact the module convenor.
Any reassessment for this module will be an essay or assignment.

Target Students

Available to all Undergraduate level 1 students in the Department of Classics and Archaeology including Liberal Arts, exchange and subsidiary students. CLAR1001and CLAR1002 should be taken as a pair, but if there is a valid reason why you are unable to enrol for one or other of these modules, please contact Nicholas Wilshere, the departmental Language Teaching Co-ordinator, to discuss your options.

Classes

Students have to learn Latin vocabulary and the declensions and conjugations of Latin nouns, adjectives and verbs. Online practice and homework exercises help students to learn to read Latin with confidence.

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

To introduce basic Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary and thereby enable students to read and understand basic Latin sentences and passages.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary and its interpretation.

Intellectual skills: Acquire substantial quantities of information systematically and process it effectively. 

Professional Practical Skills: Read Latin sentences and passages independently and with a high level of accuracy and understanding; translate unseen a straightforward passage in Latin from poetry and non-technical prose. 

Transferrable (key) Skills: Work productively with others; organise and manage their working time, including scheduling tasks and meeting deadlines.
