Summary
The module is designed to introduce both more conventional and emerging concepts in project management in civil engineering and construction.
To this end, more conventional topics such as: key concepts of project management, project life cycle, project stages and scope, management theories, organisational design and behaviour, project teams, conflict management, motivation, and leadership, project governance and stakeholder management, business strategy and investment appraisal, procurement and contracts, project risk management, project estimating and budgeting, project scheduling and monitoring, quality management, health and safety management, design management, construction procedures and project close-out will be covered. Alongside these topics, emerging concepts such as lean management in civil engineering and construction, design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA), off-site and industrialised construction, circularity in civil engineering and construction, knowledge and innovation management and value management will also be covered. Practical implications of civil engineering project management theories and tools will be discussed with real life examples.
While some content can be covered in synchronous (face-to-face) sessions, others can be covered through asynchronous material, or in the form of directed self-study appropriate at this level.
Target Students
MSc Civil Engineering and Management students
Assessment
- 25% Presentation 1: Group Presentation on a given scenario or subject
- 25% Coursework 1: Group report on a given scenario or subject (5000 words)
- 50% Exam 1 (2-hour): Closed book/on-campus exam
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The module is aimed at providing a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of the contemporary knowledge domains in project management for postgraduate students with a particular focus on civil engineering and construction.Content is informed by requirements from key organisations such as the Project Management Institute (PMI), Association for Project Management (APM), American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM), Institute for Civil Engineers (ICE) and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).Within the context of the MSc Civil Engineering and Management course, which is delivered jointly by the Department of Civil Engineering and the Business School, the module will bridge the civil engineering knowledge domain with the project and engineering management knowledge domain. Overall, the content will have both a theoretical construct and practical content targeting the civil engineering and construction manager. The module will be delivered through a series of lectures (by tutors and industrial and academic guest lecturers), seminars, tutorials, and computer workshops supported by guided reading and reflective, hands-on exercises. Learning will be directed primarily through face-to-face contact with additional support on Moodle. Learning package material consists of presentations, lecture notes and reading material with journal and conference papers, case studies, worked examples, internet sources, reflective exercises, and audio-visual content to support independent, self-directed learning.Knowledge on project management from an civil engineering and construction perspective as well as related digital skills and research literacy will be developed through carefully designed seminars and workshops. Students will have opportunities to analyse existing case studies, industrial practices and research results through presentations and discussions at group seminars. Within these seminars and workshops, students are encouraged to develop analytical and problem-solving skills in relation to project management concepts and techniques in civil engineering and construction.Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of the background, and established body of knowledge and theory within project management in civil engineering and construction.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the emerging topics and modern approaches and trends within project management in civil engineering and construction.
Develop a critical understanding of the link between the theory in civil engineering and construction project management with real-life, contemporary practice.
Evaluate and deploy different types of project management tools and techniques for different processes in civil engineering and construction.
Develop an understanding of the differences between managing engineering and construction projects within civil engineering and construction project management.
