Summary
This module gives a foundation in all the major materials involved in highway and railway construction. Principally this includes unbound materials and asphalt, together with some material on hydraulically bound materials. In each case, properties, mixture design and construction issues are all covered.
Target Students
Part II and MSc Civil Engineering students There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice. Available to JYA/Erasmus students.
Classes
- One 1-hour practicum each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Asphalt
- 20% Coursework 2: Asphalt
- 60% Exam 1 (2-hour): 2 Hours Exam
Educational Aims
To provide an understanding of particulate materials with and without binderTo give understanding of measurement and use of the properties of such materials.Learning Outcomes
On successfully completing the module, students will be able to:
1) Characterise subgrade soils for pavement or railway design.
2) Understand the behaviour of unbound road bases / sub-bases and railway ballast.
3) Design and utilise the properties of an asphalt mixture for different purposes.
4) Understand the use of different forms of concrete in highways and railways.
