Summary
This course (module) forms the major project element for all MSc plans in the Department of Civil Engineering. It will normally take the form of an investigation, whether it involves experimentation, modelling, an extensive review and further analysis of work already completed by others, or a significant design relating to a Civil Engineering theme. For students on the MSc Civil Engineering and Management plan, the project must include an element of management related principles. The detailed technical content of the module will depend on the specific area under examination.
For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.
Target Students
MSc students in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Assessment
- 100% Report: A report relating to the topic of the project. The length will vary depending on the nature of the project.
Assessed by end of summer vacation
Educational Aims
To provide students with the experience of carrying out a major project in a relevant field of civil engineering (and management for students on the MSc Civil Engineering and Management plan). The aspects to be covered include: project definition and establishing aims and objectives literature review practical or theoretical investigation, design and/or review critical analysis of findings conclusions and dissemination of the work in the form of a report.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Implement a research project with agreed procedures and to specification.
2. Organise, analyse and evaluate the project outcomes.
3. Use appropriate project evaluation techniques.
4. Present the project outcomes in the form of a report.
This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
-Knowledge and Understanding: M1, M2
-Intellectual Skills: M3, M4, C6
-Professional/Practical Skills: C13
-Transferable/Key Skills: M17
