Summary
This course (module) introduces students to the design of reinforced concrete structures. The following topics will be discussed:
(1) Introduction to reinforced concrete (RC) structures and Eurocode 2
(2) Material properties: concrete and steel; Durability and cover to reinforcement
(3) Elastic analysis of the RC section
(4) Analysis of the RC section: failure in flexure
(5) RC beams: design in flexure and shear
(6) RC beams: serviceability
(7) RC stocky columns: design in flexure
(8) RC slender columns: slenderness, second order moments
(9) Analysis and design of RC slabs: one- and two-way slabs
(10) Analysis and design for punching shear
(11) Detailing of reinforcement: bond and anchorage of longitudinal reinforcement
(12) Detailing of members: beams, columns, slabs
For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment, with any group-based components made suitable for completion by an individual.
Target Students
Part II BEng/MEng students in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Group laboratory written report.
- 80% Exam 1 (3-hour): Written examination.

Educational Aims
To introduce reinforced concrete construction and show the relationship between structural behaviour and the design of reinforced concrete elements.To develop the structural design procedures for reinforced concrete elements in flexure, shear and compression.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Apply a comprehensive knowledge of mathematics and engineering principles to the solution of problems in the design of reinforced concrete structural members.
2. Select and apply appropriate analytical techniques to model the behaviour of reinforced concrete members, discussing the limitations of the approaches employed.
3. Use practical laboratory skills to understand the behaviour of reinforced concrete members.
4. Select and apply appropriate materials, analytical and design processes, recognising their limitations.
5. Function effectively as an individual, and a member or leader of a team and evaluate effectiveness of own performance.
6. Communicate effectively on complex engineering matters with technical and non-technical audience and evaluate the effectiveness of the methods used.
