Summary
This course (module) extends students knowledge in the field of civil engineering construction management and provides the opportunity to apply their knowledge to simulated project. It covers the following topics:
(1) Project planning of linear and repetitive projects
(2) Earned value management
(3) Procurement and contract
(4) Risk management
For students requiring reassessment, this will consist of a single, course (module) specific two hour written examination.
Target Students
MEng Part II or MSc Civil Engineering students
Classes
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Progress report
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour): 2 hours Exam
Educational Aims
To introduce students to the principles of engineering construction management and to enable students to apply these principles to manage a simulation project.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge of engineering management principles, project and change management to plan linear and repetitive project
2. Apply knowledge contract and relevant legal matters to the selection of procurement strategies
2. Use a risk management process to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks (the effects of uncertainty) associated with a particular project or activity
3. Communicate effectively on complex engineering matters with technical and non-technical audiences, evaluating the effectiveness of the methods used
This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1, M2
- Professional/Practical Skills: M9
- Transferable/Key Skills: M15, M17
