Summary

The fundamental behaviour established in CIVE1025 is extended to cover the concepts of:
(1) Virtual work
(2) Analysis of indeterminate structures using the flexibility method
(3) Analysis of indeterminate structures using the stiffness method
(4) Instability of structural systems: instability and elastic collapse, strut buckling
(5) Plastic analysis and design: plastic collapse theorems of plastic analysis, plastic design
(6) Vibration

For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.

Target Students

Part I Civil Engineering students

Classes

Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester

Assessment

Assessed in both autumn & spring semest

Educational Aims

To develop an understanding and confidence in conducting elastic and plastic analysis for determinate and inderterminate structures.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Select and apply appropriate techniques to model and analyse statically indeterminate structures.
2. Analyse beams and frames using the theorems of plastic collapse
3. Predict the buckling behaviour of struts and beams
4. Determine the dynamic response of a single degree of freedom oscillator

This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
-  Knowledge and Understanding: M1
-  Intellectual Skills: M3, M6
