Summary
This course (module) extends the relationships established in CIVE1001 to consider broader principles. The topics covered include:
(1) shear strength and strain: triaxial and shear box tests; effective stress; drained and undrained tests; Mohr circles of total and effective stress; stress-strain behaviour
(2) lower and upper bound theorems of plasticity
(3) lateral earth pressure: Rankine and Coulomb theories; drained & undrained analyses; earth pressure diagrams; gravity and embedded retaining structures
(4) slope stability: straight slips; circular slips - undrained and drained behaviour; method of slices; stabilisation
(5) bearing capacity: drained and undrained behaviour, approximate upper and lower bound solutions.
For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.
Target Students
Part I BEng/MEng students in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Classes
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Activities may take place every teaching week of the semester or only in specified weeks. it is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester.
Assessment
- 100% Exam (2-hour): Course (module) specific two hour written examination.
Educational Aims
To develop further understanding of fundamental behaviour of soils and how to perform geotechnical analyses.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Recognise and analyse problems relating to strength of soils
2. Recognise and analyse problems relating to soil plasticity solutions.
3. Select and employ techniques for analysing geotechnical problems including retaining walls, slopes, and bearing capacity.
This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1
- Intellectual Skills: M3, M6
