Summary

This course (module) covers the following topics:
(1) Introduction to structural engineering and the analysis of structures
(2) Analysis of statically determinate trusses: axial forces
(3) Analysis of statically determinate beams and frames: axial force, shear force, bending moment
(4) Computation of section properties: centroid; second moment of area, principal second moments of area
(5) Analysis of stress and strain and computation of principal stresses
(6) Elasticity, Hooke's law, Poisson effect, composite beams and thermal effect
(7) Computation of stresses due to axial force and bending moment
(8) Computation of shear stresses due to shear and torsion in simple cross sections
(9) Introduction to plasticity

For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.

Classes

Assessment

Educational Aims

To develop an understanding and confidence in carrying elastic analysis for determinate structures. To develop knowledge about stresses and strain in beams due to bending moment, torsion, shear and axial forceTo develop understanding of the fundamental of plasticity and on yield/plastic moment of beams

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of ths course (module), students will be able to:
1. Analyse 2D statically determinate trusses and continuous structures.
2. Determine the geometrical properties of plane cross-sections.
3. Analyse 2D stresses and strains and compute the corresponding principal stresses.
4. Compute the stresses in beams under bending, shear, axial force and torsion.
5. Compute the yield and plastic moment of a beam cross-section.

This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
Knowledge and Understanding: M1, M2
Intellectual Skills: M3
Professional/Practical Skills: M5, M6, M13
