Summary
This course (module) is a problem-based group design project. During Phase 1, you will learn the various roles and responsibilities of a civil engineer and be introduced to fundamental techniques for using engineering drawing as a key format of engineering communication. Key principles underpinning construction planning and risk management will then be introduced and applied in the context of a group-based civil engineering project. During Phase 2, you will work in groups to design and analyse a timber truss structure, and then prepare a plan of construction for your design. You will then execute your plan during a field-work type construction exercise.
For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components that have been failed and will be in the same form as the orginal assessment, with any group-based components made suitable for completion by an individual.

Educational Aims
To appreciate the civil engineering industry and profession and how construction management is undertaken. To understand the processes involved in the planning and management of a civil engineering project. To gain knowledge in and practice the design of an engineering structure. To gain practical experience of developing and executing a construction plan, based on a detailed design.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Produce an engineering drawing to communicate a civil engineering design
2. Analyse an engineering drawing of a major civil engineering asset to extract data for use in developing a construction plan.
3. Analyse a construction brief to produce a construction plan, cost estimate and risk register of a civil engineering asset.
4. Apply structural analysis techniques in the design process for a timber framed structure
5. Work effectively and safely within a team to complete a construction exercise.
This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M2, M3
- Intellectual Skills: M5, M6
- Professional/Practical Skills: M9, M10, M13, M15
- Transferable/Key Skills: M16, M17
