Summary
This course (module) introduces students to the subject of hydraulics in civil engineering. We focus on studying hydrostatics, i.e. civil engineering applications involving a static body of fluid. The topics covered include:
(1) Units and dimensions.
(2) The fundamental properties of fluids.
(3) Hydrostatic pressure.
(4) Hydrostatic loads.
(5) Buoyancy.
For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment
Target Students
Only available for Civil Engineering students AND Only available for Year 2 students
Classes
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Written Examination
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To introduce students to the fundamental principles of hydrostatics and to enable students to apply these principles to model mechanics problems of relevance in civil engineering.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to apply physical principles and mathematical methods to solve problems and model hydraulic mechanisms involving hydrostatics, in applications relevant to civil engineering.
This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1
- Intellectual Skills: M3, M6
Conveners
