Summary

This module will give students the opportunity to undertake a research project in Chemistry. A wide range of projects will be available and students will be offered a selection of research areas. All projects will require a review of relevant published work and the planning and execution of a research topic under the guidance of two supervisors. Students will present their findings orally and in a written report.

Target Students

Incoming Erasmus students taking a project for one year only. Suitable prior learning in home University to be assessed by Convenor and appropriate Faculty member.

Assessed in both autumn & spring semest

Educational Aims

To allow the student to experience chemistry research and to receive research training appropriate to their project. Successful students will have:1. collected, read and understood the background literature relevant to their project;2. designed and carried out experiments which have made some contribution to knowledge in their area of study;3. reported and critically evaluated their work in writing;4. made a clear oral presentation of their results.

Learning Outcomes

Professional/Practical Skills:
1. collect and assess critically the facts and theories relevant to a particular problem;
2. focus on an aspect of a field requiring further study;
3. design experiments to test theories or reveal new knowledge .
