Summary
Various structure determination methods will be presented, covering a selection of spectroscopic and scattering methods. Advanced light and neutron sources will be introduced, moving on to their use in determining the structures of both isolated molecules and of solids (both crystalline and amorphous) and liquids. Common spectroscopic and scattering methods for chemical characterisation which underpin a variety of imaging modalities, from medical scans to material inspection will be presented. Links between the underlying physics and chemistry of imaging and the methods used in applications, including electron microscopy (EM) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be shown.
Target Students
BSc/MSci Chemistry OR Medicinal and Biological Chemistry OR Chemistry and Molecular Physics OR Natural Sciences AND for Level 3 students.
Classes
- Two 1-hour lectures each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Second re-assessment: If a further re-assessment is allowed by satisfying the conditions of Undergraduate Course Regulation 19, the form of the further re-assessment for this module will be 100% coursework.

Educational Aims
To provide an appreciation of the importance of structure in many applications in chemistry and to demonstrate a range of key methods for structure determinationLearning Outcomes
- Knowledge of a range of advanced light sources and neutron sources.
- Knowledge of how these can be applied to determine the structure from isolated molecules through bulk materials, crystalline and amorphous solid and liquids, to large scale structure, biological and physical
- Knowledge of a range of imaging techniques.
