Summary
The module is divided into two parts:
• Conformational analysis and stereochemistry: study of the conformation and the spatial orientation of linear and cyclic molecules, including strain effects. Prediction of selectivity of reactions in relation to molecule conformation and stereoisomerism. Synthesis and reactivity of cyclic molecules, including cycloadditions. Design of cyclic transition states to predict stereochemical reaction outcomes
• Carbon-carbon bond forming reactions and the influence of heteroatoms on reactivity. Revise carbonyl reactions (aldol, Claisen etc). Introduction to amino acids. Sulfur including reactivity of dithianes, oxidation levels, rearrangements etc. Silicon as a protecting group, electronic effects on reactivity, Peterson reaction etc. Phosphorus including reagent preparation, Arbuzov, P(III) vs P(V), ylides, Wittig/HWE, stereochemical outcome, Staudinger reduction
Target Students
Only available for Natural Sciences students OR Biochemistry OR Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine AND for Level 2 students.Cannot be taken with CHEM2010.
Classes
- One 1-hour workshop
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 2 weeks
- Two 1-hour lectures each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Second re-assessment: If a further re-assessment is allowed by satisfying the conditions of Undergraduate Course Regulation 19, the form of the further re-assessment for this module will be 100% coursework.

Educational Aims
• Impart understanding of methods and strategies used for organic synthesis and to illustrate a logical approach to the synthesis of significant target molecules.• Imbue understanding and appreciation of organic stereochemistry and related topics, including conformation analysis and the fundamental origins of stereocontrol in organic reactions.Learning Outcomes
• Recognise functional groups and anticipate their reactivity
• Predict the conformation of molecules, and explain how this influence reactivity and selectivity
• Explain reactions using appropriate curly arrow mechanisms and diagrams
• Apply principles of retrosynthetic analysis & plan synthesis of target molecules
Transferable Skills: Problem Solving; Written Communication Skills.
