Summary

By the final exam, students will be able predict/discuss reactivity, suggest synthetic routes and interpret/suggest spectroscopic characterisation of unseen compounds.

• Modern spectroscopic techniques, including mass spectrometry, infra red spectroscopy, as well as relating shift and coupling patterns observed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy to assign molecular structures.

• Reactivity of aromatic and heterocyclic rings including electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution, oxidations and reductions, nomenclature etc

• Synthesis, reactivity, bonding and conformation of rings, stereoelectronic effects, anomeric effect, introduction to carbohydrates. Synthesis of rings including cycloadditions. Enantioselectivity, diastereoselectivity, prochirality etc. Use of cyclic transitions states to predict stereochemical reaction outcome.

• Carbon-carbon bond forming reactions and the influence of heteroatoms on reactivity. Revise carbonyl reactions (aldol, Claisen etc). Sulfur including reactivity of dithianes, oxidation levels, rearrangements etc. Silicon as a protecting group, electronic effects on reactivity, Peterson reaction etc. Phosphorus including reagent preparation, Arbuzov, P(III) vs P(V), ylides, Wittig/HWE, stereochemical outcome, Staudinger reduction. Boron including hydroboration; Lewis acidity and allylation of carbonyls etc.

Target Students

Only available for BSc/MSci Chemistry OR BSc/MSci Medicinal and Biological AND Only available for Level 2 students.Cannot be taken with CHEM2013 or CHEM2002.

Classes

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

Impart understanding of methods and strategies used for organic synthesis and to illustrate a logical approach to the synthesis of significant target molecules.• Provide specific focus on aromatic reactivity, including preparation and elaboration of heteroaromatic compounds and highlight their importance in society.• Imbue understanding and appreciation of organic stereochemistry and related topics, including conformation analysis and the fundamental origins of stereocontrol in organic reactions.•Underpin this with an understanding of a variety of spectroscopic techniques and how they may be chosen to provide the maximum amount of information about structure and bonding.

Learning Outcomes

Recognise functional groups and anticipate their reactivity.
