Summary
This module will concentrate on water treatment technologies covering those applicable to both the treatment of wastewater from different industries and the treatment of water for potable (drinking water) use. The beginning of the module will review current practice and scientific principles in water treatment. Case Studies across the water industry will be utilised to demonstrate problems and potential solutions and gain an understanding of design considerations and operation of water treatment processes. Emerging issues in water treatment and the advanced, emerging or developing technologies to address these issues will be presented. Guest speakers from industry and site visits will support the module delivery.
Target Students
Students registered in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering only.
Co-requisites

Educational Aims
To provide students with a level of understanding on a range of water and wastewater treatment technologies to enable them to design, comprehend current problems and their potential solutions, and be aware of cutting edge emerging technologies.Learning Outcomes
A2 Chemical Engineering Principles:
A2.6.8 Have some understanding of the limits of available technology and of the potential of new and emerging technology
Understanding of the drivers for advanced, emerging and developing technologies and Technology Readiness Levels relevant to challenges currently faced in the Water Industry.
A3 Chemical Engineering Practice:
A3.2.12 Understand the limitations of current practice.
Use of case studies from the Water Industry to understand limitations in current practice, including the legislative drivers and design choices for conventional versus advanced phosphorous treatment.
A3.2.13 Have a broad knowledge and critical awareness of developments at the forefront of chemical engineering;
Integration of knowledge and understanding from case studies and technical literature to appreciate the move from wastewater treatment to resource recycling facilities, the latter including valorisation opportunities and approaches in wastewater treatment.
A5 Embedded Learning:
A5.2.13 Have some understanding of the limits of available technology and of the potential of new and emerging technology.
Understanding of the drivers for advanced, emerging and developing technologies and Technology Readiness Levels relevant to challenges currently faced in the Water Industry.'
