Summary
This module aims to introduce selected topics at the forefront of chemical research and to outline the fundamental chemical concepts that underpin them. Topics include: 1. Polymer Chemistry 2. Microscopy in Chemistry 3. Modelling Chemistry and Computers 4. Electrochemistry and Devices.
Target Students
Students registered in the BSc (Hons) Chemistry 2+2 programme
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 12 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework: coursework
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour): 2-hour final exam

Educational Aims
To ensure that students understand the fundamental basis of polymer chemistry and forefront research directions in polymers.To ensure that students understand the principles and applications of microscopy tools.To ensure that students are able to modelling molecules and use computational chemistry. To ensure that students understand the electrochemistry and devices.Learning Outcomes
1. Understand the structure and properties of polymers and frontiers in polymer research.
2. Understand how modern microscopy techniques can be used to image systems down to the molecular level.
3. Understand how molecules can be modelled using computational chemistry and appreciate its contribution to modern chemical research.
4. Recognise the importance of chemistry in the design and development of new devices and technology.
