Summary
This module aims to prepare students for further study of linguistics and literature. Two main parts focus, respectively, on studying language as science and studying language as a form of social and creative expression. The first explores the relationship between language and the mind and covers topics such as first and second language acquisition, language and thought, language and the brain. The second introduces students to intercultural communication, literature and literary linguistics, writing and e-language, and the language of advertising.
The module raises awareness of some practical applications of linguistic study and introduces related methodologies.
Target Students
Only available to students on the preliminary year programme at UNNC.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 40% Portfolio: a collection of learner's work (individual and collaborative) that demonstrates their competence and/or range of effort.
- 60% Exam 1 (1-hour): EoS written exam; short and long questions, linguistic and/or literary analysis, problem solving tasks

Educational Aims
To encourage reflection on language education and language use in literary texts, advertising, and everyday interaction.To raise awareness of language acquisition and processing. Upon successful completion of this module, students will have developed:

• A basic understanding of genre and the ability to recognise patterns of language in literary and other types of text.

• An awareness of issues related to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Sustainability (EDI&S)
