Summary
The aim of the module is to introduce the students to the principles of design and their purpose in the development of design ideas within a range of disciplines, including architecture. This module will allow you to identify and analyse the key principles of design and how they are applied and function within a range of design and architectural practices.
Target Students
This module is designed to target (but not limited to) first year students, non-native English speakers, aspiring artists, architects or interior designers, students seeking cross-cultural education
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 50% Project 1: Students will research one principle of design, define it and give examples of how it functions within architectural design using historical and contemporary precedents.
- 50% Project 2: Students must use background research, photographs, sketches and text to create posters that analyse the key design features of the chosen building.
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
1. Introduction to Design PrinciplesTo familiarize students with the core principles of design, explaining their significance and function in the development of creative ideas across various disciplines, with a focus on architecture.2. Application of Design Principles in ArchitectureApplication of Design Principles in Architecture: To demonstrate how design principles are applied in architectural practices. This includes understanding the role these principles play in historical and contemporary architectural projects.3. Engagement with Industry StandardsTo provide students with insights from local architects, thereby enhancing their understanding of how design principles are implemented in real-world projects and professional practices.4. Analytical Skills DevelopmentTo develop students’ ability to critically analyse design elements in architecture. This will be achieved through class discussions, assignments, and direct analysis of design principles in various architectural works.5. Research and Presentation SkillsTo enhance students’ research capabilities and presentation skills, particularly in the context of articulating the function and impact of specific design principles within architectural design, using both historical and contemporary examples.6. Creative and Visual Communication SkillsTo improve students’ skills in visual communication, encouraging them to effectively use photographs, sketches, and text to create informative and visually appealing posters that analyse key design features of selected buildings.Learning Outcomes
Understanding of Design Principles: Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of design, including their role and application in architectural design and other related disciplines.
Analytical Skills in Architectural Contexts: Students will develop strong analytical skills, enabling them to critically evaluate and discuss how design principles are manifested in various architectural works, both historical and contemporary.
Effective Research and Presentation Abilities: Students will gain proficiency in conducting thorough research on design principles. They will also develop the ability to present their findings clearly and convincingly, both orally and in written formats.
Integration of Theory and Practice: Students will learn to integrate theoretical knowledge of design principles with practical examples, as demonstrated by guest architects and through their own analyses of architectural works.
Visual Communication Skills: Students will enhance their skills in visual communication, particularly in creating effective posters that combine photographs, sketches, and text to analyze and illustrate key design features of buildings
Collaborative and Independent Working Skills: Students will improve their ability to work effectively both independently and in groups, especially in the context of researching, discussing, and presenting design principles and their application in architecture.
